The digital interoperability of the Port of Algeciras takes center stage at Fruit Attraction

The Port of Algeciras is attending Fruit Attraction in Madrid this week , accompanied by some thirty companies from its Port Community and under the auspices of Puertos del Estado (located at stand C18 in Hall 4 ). The major new development for the Strait port at the Madrid event is the Digital Interoperability Project between its Port Community System and the Central American Digital Trade Platform.

The president of the Port Authority, Gerardo Landaluce , highlighted the importance of the project, recently presented in San José, Costa Rica, with the collaboration of the European Union and the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration ( SIECA ). Landaluce explained that the main objective is "to boost bi-regional trade in fresh produce between Andalusia and Central America ."

Implementing this interoperability will facilitate the digital exchange of key documents, such as health certificates and customs documents , between the two regions. One of the most significant benefits is that it will expedite the document review process for goods inspection. This translates into reduced waiting times , as well as a notable increase in reliability and efficiency during the entry of goods into the European Union through Algeciras.

In essence, the initiative guarantees a streamlined, secure, and intelligent document flow , while offering exporters and operators complete physical and documentary traceability , from port to port, along the entire maritime route. This ambitious project aligns with the EU's Global Gateway strategy , which focuses on promoting sustainable, digital, and reliable infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Thanks to this advanced digitalization , Central America, which has maintained an association agreement with the EU for a decade, is at the forefront of digital trade facilitation . Meanwhile, the Port of Algeciras is reinforcing its role as a strategic partner of Europe for the development of modern and resilient logistics chains.

Participation in round tables on reefer logistics

In addition to presenting its flagship project, the Port Authority of Algeciras ( APBA ) will have an active participation in various forums and round tables within the framework of Fruit Attraction.

Javier López , head of the Commercial Department at the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay ( APBA ), will speak this Monday at the 2nd Cold Chain Summit , organized by Cadena de Suministro (Supply Chain). Subsequently, on Wednesday, October 1st, López will participate in a panel discussion at the Global Coalition of Fresh Products . At this meeting, Algeciras will present its model as a proactive reefer port , sharing experiences with logistics managers from countries such as India, Canada, and South Africa.

Fruit and vegetable traffic is considered strategic for the Port of Algeciras. The port offers its clients state-of-the-art facilities, with over 5.500 reefer plugs in its container terminals, all monitored 24/7 to handle import and export flows, as well as the logistics platform. The port also has a total capacity for over 30.000 pallets in its cold storage terminals, both within the port area and in the surrounding logistics zones.
