Last week, Mariano Navas, president of the public entity Puertos del Estado, sought to reassure the Spanish port sector (operators and private companies involved in port activity, such as stevedoring) by confirming that the reform of the upcoming sector law will introduce a "rationalization and simplification" of port fees, so that the different port authorities will set their own fees, avoiding situations of unfair competition.
Navas seeks consensus among the 27 state-owned port authorities, but with a clear idea: to give greater capacity to stipulate the amount of the fees without modifying the port management model, as demanded by the proposal launched from Barcelona by the president of its port, Joaquim Coello.
