The Port of Algeciras strengthens alliances with the Philippines at the Madrid Business Forum

Within the framework of the second day of the XI Spain-Philippines Business Forum, Port of Algeciras has played a leading role by participating in a roundtable discussion focused on port cooperation and sustainability. John Paul Perez, Head of the Port Planning Department of the Port Authority of Algeciras (APBA), shares the port's decarbonization strategy, underlining the institution's commitment to the energy transition in the maritime-port sector.

“Our goal is to lead the transition to a more sustainable port model, minimizing our environmental impact and contributing to the fight against climate change,” said Juan Pablo Pérez during his speech. “We are convinced that collaboration and the exchange of best practices are essential to moving forward in this direction.”

The meeting, organized by Casa Asia together with important institutions, becomes a platform to strengthen commercial ties and promote cooperation in the areas of sustainability and decarbonization.

The Port of Algeciras' participation in this forum strengthens its close relationship with the maritime-port and export sector of the Philippines, a country with a potential market of 110 million inhabitants. This connection was consolidated in November 2024 with the first Trade Mission to the Philippines, led by the Port of Algeciras and its port community, which took place in the Philippine capital, Manila.

"The trade mission to Manila was a resounding success," said an APBA representative. "It allowed us to establish key contacts and explore new business opportunities in a growing market."

The interest in strengthening trade ties with the Southeast Asia remains firm, and as proof of this, the Madrid Chamber of Commerce will organize on March 27 the internationalization workshop "The Port of Algeciras, key to connectivity with Asian countries." This free event is aimed at companies seeking to expand their presence in the region.

"We want to facilitate access for Spanish companies to the Asian market, and the Port of Algeciras is positioning itself as a strategic partner to achieve this," said a spokesperson for the Madrid Chamber of Commerce.

The workshop will feature the participation of the president of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, and representatives of Andalucía Trade and the Spain-ASEAN Business Association (ASEMPEA), who will offer their vision and experience in the field of international trade.
