El Port de Barcelona has started the year 2024 with a very positive balance, registering notable growth in freight, container and passenger traffic during the first four months of the year. These figures consolidate the port's position as one of the main logistics hubs in the Summer and reinforce its key role in the Catalan economy.

The port's total traffic has reached 22,8 million tons in the first four months of the year, which represents an increase of 8,2% compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is mainly driven by the spectacular increase in container traffic, which has touched 1,3 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit), 25,7% more than in the same period of the previous year.

The growth of containers in transit stands out, with an increase of 54,3%, while import and export containers also maintain a positive trend, with a growth of 7,2%.

Solid and liquid bulks experience a slight decrease, -14,5% and -12,6% respectively, mainly due to the drop in natural gas (-56%). However, other products such as chemicals (40,2%), gasoline, diesel, cereals and flour (15,1%) and soybeans maintain good performance.

Growth is expected to be maintained during the rest of the year, thanks to the economic recovery, the stabilization of global trade and the port's commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Vehicle traffic

Vehicle traffic has experienced a decrease of 7,7%, standing at 246.333 units, mainly due to the drop in imports. Exports, on the other hand, have grown by 14,3%.

Consolidated international trade

The main markets of the Port of Barcelona, both in the Mediterranean and in Middle East, Far East and America, are growing and showing a stabilization of world trade. China continues to be the main origin and destination of the port's international trade, with a share of 26%, followed by EUnited States, Türkiye, India and Vietnam.

Positive outlook for the rest of the year

The positive figures for the first four months of 2024 are a clear indication of the economic recovery and the key role that the Port of Barcelona plays in international trade. With the consolidation of container growth and traffic diversification, the port is positioned as a leading logistics hub in the Mediterranean and an economic engine for the city of Barcelona and its surroundings.
