Power grid saturation is slowing investment in the Spanish logistics sector.

The Association of Logistics Operators (UNO) has sounded the alarm about the shortage of capacity in the electricity distribution network, a problem it considers "alarming." According to official electricity demand access maps, 83,4% of the network nodes are saturated , a situation that, according to its president Francisco Aranda , "compromises the viability of new electrical connections for logistics platforms, fleet electrification projects, industrial refrigeration facilities, and developments linked to supply chain automation . "

Aranda emphasized that the saturation is especially “pronounced in industrial parks, logistics centers, and transport corridors ,” precisely the key areas for the country's economic development. This situation is perceived as a direct obstacle to growth and competitiveness , threatening the implementation of vital projects for the modernization of logistics and transport.

The president of UNO pointed out that the logistics sector, which represents around 7% of Spain's GDP , is undergoing a transformation towards a more sustainable and digital model. However, "without grid connection capacity, many investments will be halted or relocated to other countries with greater energy security ." The risk, he said, is that Spain will lose its position as a logistics and industrial hub . "With an overloaded distribution network, I reiterate that every day that passes stalls investments, delays job creation, and hinders the true decarbonization of transport and logistics ," he concluded.

Given this situation, UNO has requested an extraordinary and urgent plan to strengthen and digitize the distribution network in key logistics hubs. The employers' association is also calling for a "stable remuneration framework that accelerates investment in infrastructure and raises investment limits where necessary ," prioritizing projects aligned with European decarbonization goals.

As an additional measure, Aranda has proposed the creation of a public-private working group, including the logistics and transport sector, with the aim of “coordinating priorities and shortening timelines in those congested areas with a high economic and employment impact .” The message is clear: “The energy transition in logistics cannot remain a dead letter due to a lack of foresight in the grid. We need a firm commitment and immediate measures so that Spain remains a competitive logistics hub in Europe . ”

Aranda concluded with a stark warning: “Spain cannot lose this race. Without electrical capacity, there is no electrification, no investment attraction, and no job creation in the logistics sector .” His request is not for privileges, but for “certainty and a network that supports our growth so we can remain competitive . ”
