The Trasmediterránea Shipping Company was founded in early 1917 when José Juan Dómine, Vicente Ferrer, Joaquín Tintoré, and Enrique García merged their respective shipping companies. The company began with a share capital of 100 million pesetas and 45 ships. Branches were opened in Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, and the Canary Islands, and in just five years the value of the fleet had more than doubled its initial capital. From then until now, it is safe to say that Trasmediterránea has become one of Spain's leading shipping companies.
Trasmediterránea currently operates a large fleet of over 25 vessels. This fleet comprises 6 high-speed boats, 6 roll-on/roll-off cargo ships, and 13 passenger ferries with cargo garages.
Throughout its more than eighty years of existence, Trasmediterránea has been regularly connecting the peninsula with the Balearic and Canary Islands, and with Ceuta and Melilla, in addition to inter-island communications in the Canary Islands and two international lines Algeciras-Tangier and Almería-Nador.
At the beginning of this year, Trasmediterránea was awarded new contracts for public interest maritime routes between the Iberian Peninsula and destinations such as the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and Ceuta and Melilla. These new contracts, signed by the Ministry of Public Works, have an initial validity of five years. The key new feature is the introduction of a high-speed vessel during the summer season on the Melilla route. These fast ferries, which transport passengers and vehicles, already operate on the Valencia-Balearic Islands route. Other high-speed vessels, catamarans, cover the Algeciras-Ceuta and Barcelona-Palma de Mallorca routes. Meanwhile, the jetfoil high-speed service between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife carries only passengers.
All passenger ships have shops, bars, self-service and restaurants with the aim of making the journey on board a pleasure; in addition, long-distance voyages have leisure areas (television-cinema, children's play area and swimming pool).
Over the past three years, Trasmediterránea has renewed its fleet, culminating this process last March with the addition of the ropax "Murillo" in the Mediterranean Zone, and the ferry "Isla de la Gomera" on the Los Cristianos-La Gomera-El Hierro line.
In addition, last year four new ships were added to the fleet that began operating in the Mediterranean area: the superferries "Sorolla" and "Fortuny"; the high-speed catamaran "Alborán" on the Algeciras-Ceuta line; and the ro-ro "Super Fast Levante", which was assigned to the Cadiz-Canary Islands traffic.
