Trump threatens 25% tariffs on European cars, with exemption for US production

In a statement posted on his social media accounts, Trump justified the measure by claiming that the European Union "is not fully complying with the agreed trade agreement," although he offered no specific details about Brussels' alleged violations. This tariff escalation comes at a time of heightened diplomatic tension, just one day after the US president openly criticized the German chancellor. Friedrich Merz, because of its stance on the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.

Economic and legal impact The measure strikes at the heart of European industry. According to Eurostat data, trade in goods and services between the two blocs reached 1,7 billion euros in 2024. The European Commission has reacted cautiously but firmly, recalling that the 2025 pact aimed to save European manufacturers between 500 and 600 million euros per month in tariff costs.

From a legal standpoint, the US administration is seeking to circumvent the recent limitation imposed by the US Supreme Court earlier this year, which restricted the use of economic emergencies to impose tariffs. Instead, Washington is reactivating investigations based on criteria of "national security" and "trade imbalance," a strategy the EU describes as protectionist.

Spain and the automotive sector Although the main focus of the measure falls on large German groups such as Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-BenzThe repercussions for Spain are direct. As the second largest vehicle producer in Europe, the Spanish industry faces a double threat: the increased cost of exporting components to European plants that export to the US and the potential loss of competitiveness of models manufactured in Spain destined for the North American market.

Market analysts warn that if Brussels decides to implement reciprocal countermeasures, we could be facing the start of an open trade war that would jeopardize the stability of the global automotive market at a time of fragile economic recovery.
