La WTO and OECD They launched the Balanced Trade in Services dataset (BaTIS), a comprehensive tool that tracks trade in services among more than 200 economies from 2005 to 2023. Available from the WTO Data Hub on Global Trade in Services, BaTIS offers detailed analysis of 26 services sectors, from those delivered digitally to total commercial services, with a variety of breakdowns to suit users’ needs.
One of the standout features of BaTIS is its interactive data visualization, which allows users to explore information in a customized way. The data reveals interesting trends, such as the regional focus of trade in digitally deliverable services in Europe, where 62% of exports go to economies in the region. In contrast, North America exports 82% of its digitally deliverable services to markets outside the region.
The analysis of digitally deliverable services also reveals changes in the share of African IT services exports to Europe, which increased from 47,6% in 2019 to 51,4% in 2023. While greater regionalization was observed in Asia, as well as in North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean, this change was less pronounced during the same period.
BaTIS also sheds light on exports of “other business services” from groups such as small and vulnerable economies (SVEs). In 2023, these exports were primarily directed to key markets such as United States (14%), United Kingdom (12%) and Japan (8%).
