WTO in the sights of a deep reform in the face of global challenges and calls for action

 

The main focus was to thoroughly examine the fundamental changes in the way the Organization operates, taking into account the unprecedented challenges posed by the commercial panorama This call to action comes as the WTO celebrates its 30th anniversary, making the need for effective reform even more urgent.

 

The WTO General Council meeting was a key event bringing together world leaders to address the challenges facing the multilateral trading systemThe main focus was the need for a deep reform of the WTO, which has been struggling to keep up with rapid changes in the global trading landscape.

 

Discussions focused on the need for the WTO to be more responsive and adaptable to the challenges posed by new economic and geopolitical realities. Participants recognized that the WTO must evolve to remain relevant and effective in the promotion of free and fair trade.

 

A key theme that emerged from the meeting was the need for more open and constructive dialogue among members. Participants acknowledged that old positions and viewpoints must be put aside in order to achieve real progress on WTO reform.

 

La Director General Okonjo-Iweala He proposed the creation of an independent panel of eminent persons to carry out a thorough review of the organisation. This panel would be made up of experts in technical trade issues and in the political economy of trade, and would be chaired by a respected political leader.

 

The purpose of this group would be to identify areas where the WTO needs to improve and make recommendations for reform. Members would have the opportunity to nominate people to this group to ensure balance and participation, but the group would operate independently.

 

The 14th WTO Ministerial Conference, to be held in Cameroon in March 2026, is expected to be a transformative event that will deliver tangible results in reforming the organization.

 

The meeting of the WTO General Council was an important step on the road to reforming the organisation. World leaders recognised the urgent need to adapt the WTO to the challenges of the 21st century.
