Abertis, through its subsidiary ViasChile and in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works of Chile, will carry out an ambitious project to improve mobility in Santiago of Chile. The plan includes the construction of two tunnels, each 1,5 kilometers long, under Cerro Lo Ruiz, which will reduce vehicle flow by 25% in one of the most congested areas of the Chilean capital and save up to 20 minutes on travel. The work will directly benefit the municipalities of Renca and Quilicura, north of Santiago.
The project, with an investment of 370 million euros, will have a total length of 5,8 kilometres and will include key connections between the motorways. General Velasquez and North VespucciConstruction is expected to begin in 2025 and will last for 50 months. In parallel, 620 jobs will be created during the construction phase.
As part of its commitment to sustainability and urban improvements, Abertis also plans to install green areas, pedestrian paths, recreational areas and sports fields. In addition, 2.500 metres of acoustic screens will be installed to minimise traffic noise, in line with the agreements reached with the community during the citizen participation process.
"The project will not only improve mobility, but also represents a significant effort to reduce environmental impact and promote urban integration," a spokesperson for VíasChile emphasized.
This new development is part of Abertis' growth strategy, which seeks to invest in existing assets in exchange for the extension of concession contracts, in this case, extending the Central Highway contract for an additional 25 months.
