The project, valued at more than $200 million, represents a significant step in the modernization of the city's rail network.
The consortium, called Trillium Rail Partners and led by ACCIONA with a 40% stake, will be responsible for the design and construction of the western extension of the Eglinton Line 5This 9,2-kilometer section will include seven new stations, four of which will be underground. The extension will connect the existing Mount Dennis station to Renforth Drive, improving connectivity for thousands of residents.
In addition to the construction work, the group of companies will be responsible for the integration of operation and control systems, signaling, communications, and data networks, with the design being carried out by the consulting firm WSP.
Reducing emissions and improving transportation
The Eglinton Line 5 extension not only seeks to improve mobility, but also has a clear focus on sustainability. Ontario transit authorities estimate that the new line will reduce up to 6,5 million car trips per year, resulting in a reduction of up to 5.800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. The project will help reduce travel times and offer a more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation alternative.
This contract reinforces ACCIONA's strong presence in Canada, where the company has developed critical infrastructure since 2001. Among its most notable projects in the country are the dam Site C in British Columbia, the new Pattullo Bridge in Vancouver and the 5,7-kilometer extension of the line MillenniumAlso in Vancouver.
ACCIONA and its local partners are also responsible for the design and construction of an elevated section of the Ontario Line North in Toronto, underscoring the Canadian authorities' confidence in the Spanish firm's experience developing large-scale transportation projects.
