ACCIONA to modernize key drinking water plant in London

The project, which will require an investment of £400 million (approximately €465 million), aims to improve the reliability of the plant and ensure continuous supply to the growing population of the british capital.

ACCIONA will be responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the new facilities. Once the works are completed, the plant will be transferred to Thames water, the private company responsible for supplying water to most of London.

Strategically located in the Lea Valley, the Coppermills plant plays a crucial role in the treatment and distribution of drinking water to the 32 boroughs that make up Greater London, including the historic City of London. Sixty years old, the current plant requires a comprehensive upgrade to meet current and future demands.

The renovation project, which will be supported by Jacobs as lead designer, includes the construction of a new pumping station and the implementation of an advanced filtration and treatment system. These improvements will ensure the high quality of the water supplied and optimize the facility's electrical supply systems.

ACCIONA's Solid Experience in the United Kingdom

This award underscores ACCIONA's growing presence and experience in the UK infrastructure sector. The company began operations in the country in 2003 and has consolidated its position through various projects.

Recently, at the beginning of 2022, the North London Waste Authority entrusted ACCIONA with a turnkey contract to develop the waste-to-energy plant Edmonton EcoPark, located north of London. This plant will have a treatment capacity of 700.000 tons per year and will be able to supply electricity and heating to approximately 50.000 homes.

Furthermore, in 2019, ACCIONA was awarded the construction and operation of another plant with similar characteristics in Aberdeen, Scotlandcalled NESS Energy Project, with a treatment capacity of 150.000 tons per year.

The upgrade of the Coppermills plant represents a major project that will strengthen London's water infrastructure and ensure a reliable, high-quality supply of drinking water for millions of residents.
