The company will introduce for the first time the use of renewable biofuel generated from oil from hydrotreated plant waste to power heavy machinery for civil works, in a pioneering initiative in the sector aimed at decarbonizing the construction of infrastructure. ACCIONA execute the project Fargo-Moorhead along with Shikun & Binui USA and North American Construction Group through the consortium ASN Constructors.

The pilot project aims to analyze the performance of biopropelled machinery. During the six months of this innovative initiative, ACCIONA will use 385.000 liters (100.000 gallons) of renewable biofuel in two bulldozers, which will be monitored to collect operation and maintenance data. The renewable biofuel will come from the second largest biofuel production facility in United States, located in North Dakota, thus promoting the local economy and innovation.

Renewable biofuel generated from hydrotreated vegetable waste oil (HVO) Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a renewable liquid fuel that has similar properties to traditional fossil fuel, but generates 90% fewer emissions. This remaining 10% corresponds mainly to the emissions generated by the HVO production process and not to its consumption.

With the implementation of this pilot, a reduction of 1000 tons of CO2 is expected in the Fargo-Moorhead project. Its extended use in the project could reduce almost 40% of the projected greenhouse gas emissions of the manufacturing business. Construction of ACCIONA for the 2023 year.

The innovative initiative to use HVO in heavy machinery is part of ACCIONA's emissions reduction program within the Sustainability Master Plan 2025 and is financed by the ACCIONA Decarbonization Fund. The purpose of the fund is to financially support those initiatives that promote carbon neutrality in the company's direct operations. In 2023, this fund is contributing to the financing of 17 decarbonization initiatives in different ACCIONA projects around the world.
