CAF awarded multi-million dollar contract for trams in New Taipei City

CAF reached an important agreement with the prominent Malaysian construction company Gamuda Berhard for the supply of Urbos trams. These vehicles, intended for the Xidong and Keelung lines in New Taipei, will be operated by the Rapid Transit Systems Department, the local transport agency. The contract also covers the supply of spare parts, depot equipment, and a driving simulator, with a value that could be close to 200 millones de euros if all options are exercised.

This represents the CAF's second major project in TaiwanPreviously, the company led the construction of what was the world's first completely catenary-free tram line in Kaohsiung, in the south of the country. An innovative technology that allows trams to operate without overhead cables, recharging their energy while parked at stops.

In this new contract, the construction company Gamuda will lead the comprehensive project. This achievement represents CAF's second major milestone in the Taiwanese market since its foray two decades ago. The award not only demonstrates the CAF's technological and industrial capacity and the Malaysian construction group to carry out highly demanding, value-added mobility projects, but also consolidates its track record and the trust that the Taiwanese authorities place in its experience and competence.

This contract, which could reach 200 million euros, includes the supply of up to 23 Urbos trams for the Xidong and Keelung lines in New Taipei, Taiwan, thus strengthening CAF's position as a global leader in the sector.

New Taipei is the largest municipality in Taiwan, with a population of nearly 4 million. This project is part of a major infrastructure initiative in the metropolitan area, designed to meet the growing demand for rail transport. The first line, Xizhi-Donghu (Xidong), will have a route of about 6 kilometers, completely elevated, six stations, and a depot for the units. It will include the supply of rolling stock and the systems necessary for its operation.

The Urbos trams that CAF will supply will be units of 9 aluminum modules, with a length exceeding 55 meters. Each unit will have a maximum capacity of up to 615 passengers and will be fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. It is important to note that these vehicles will incorporate the most modern and advanced technology of their kind, and their design has taken into account the particular climatic conditions of the region, as well as the operational requirements arising from the high population density in New Taipei.

This award underlines CAF's position as one of the world leaders in urban mobility solutions, especially in the streetcar segment. With this new contract, New Taipei joins the list of more than 50 cities where CAF units are already in circulation, including Stockholm, Liège, Sydney, Luxembourg, Birmingham, Mauritius, Houston, Budapest, Oslo, Lisbon, Boston, Zaragoza and Seville, among others.
