Spain joins the investment wave

More than 33 ministers and 100 senior public officials from across Africa will meet in Barcelona with investors from almost 90 countries to discuss the future of energy on the continent.

More than 33 ministers and 100 high-ranking public officials from all over Africa will meet in Barcelona from June 25 to 28 for the 26th edition of the Africa Energy Forum (aef), a crucial platform for the continent's energy development.

 

Spain, committed to financing energy projects in Africa, joins a group of European nations seeking to boost clean energy in the region. With an investment of 2300 billion dollars in South Africa and the recent support for green hydrogen projects in Mauritania, Spain demonstrates its interest in a sustainable energy future for Africa.

 

While renewable energy generation capacity in Africa has doubled in the last decade, there is still much to be done. A study of Climate Analytics notes that $100.000 billion annually in climate investments are needed to meet the renewable energy targets agreed at COP28, five times more than current levels.

 

Simon Gosling of EnergyNetHe states, “The private sector is willing to invest billions, but projects aren’t progressing fast enough.” The lack of electrification in Africa and barriers to private investment threaten to have serious repercussions for food security, access to resources, and the continent’s economic growth.

 

The Africa Energy Forum 2024 is emerging as a decisive event for Africa's energy future. With the participation of key public and private sector leaders, the forum seeks to drive investment, address challenges and create a path towards a sustainable and prosperous energy future for the continent

The aef24 aims to address these challenges head-on with the theme "Energy Systems for the Future: Balancing Africa's Needs with Global Goals." The event will bring together representatives from the public and private sectors to openly discuss the barriers and opportunities facing the African energy sector.

 

Round tables and exclusive events

 

A closed-door roundtable will bring together ministers, vice presidents, utility managers, regulators, financial institutions and private investors for an unprecedented dialogue. Additionally, a new roundtable on corporate leadership will give private sector developers and investors a space to discuss their challenges and opportunities.

 

Africa on center stage

 

With almost 2500 delegates, aef24 will have an unprecedented ministerial presence, including representatives from Nigeria, Egypt, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Togo, Gabon, Central African Republic and Zambia.
