Air Berlin will retain the LTU brand for long-haul tourist flights.

It will replace them on short and medium routes with the name of the parent company

German airline Air Berlin will retain the LTU brand for long-haul leisure flights and replace it with the name of its parent company on short- and medium-haul flights.

Air Berlin announced today that LTU will be the brand for flights to the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Cuba and Thailand, among others, but will eliminate this name for European flights, where "Air Berlin has become more competitive, while LTU has lost market share."

Furthermore, LTU will disappear as a brand for business flights to the US and China, which will operate under the name of the parent company, Air Berlin.

The airline also announced that from November 1st it will offer flights to New York starting at 129 euros (182 dollars) each way from Düsseldorf (western Germany) and starting at 169 euros (238 dollars) from other German cities.

Air Berlin acquired its German competitor LTU in March for $140 million (US$196 million) and also assumed its net debt of between €190 and €200 million (US$266 and US$280 million).

On the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Air Berlin shares were down 2,9 percent at 11:45 GMT, to 12,11 euros.
