At a meeting held in Madrid, Jose Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, received his Hungarian counterpart, Peter SzijjartoThe main objective of the meeting was to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries through an exhaustive analysis of trade exchanges and the evolution of current cultural programs.
During the working session, both ministers addressed crucial issues in the international arena with special emphasis on community issues such as the expansion of the European Union, competitiveness and industry. They also discussed the EU-Mercosur Agreement and the official status of the Spanish co-official languages in the EU. This dialogue underlines the shared commitment within the European and Atlantic framework to address common challenges.
Cultural exchange was also a highlight. Almost 100 people currently reside there. 11.000 Hungarians in Spain against 940 Spanish living in Hungary. In business terms, the Spanish exports to Hungary are led by semi-manufactured goods (24%), followed by food (22%) and capital goods (21%).
In addition, there is a Growing interest in the Spanish language in Hungary. In the 2023/24 academic year, 1.211 students in Primary and 15.131 in Secondary were registered studying Spanish, supported by approximately 253 teachers. Bilingual sections are key to this teaching, present in seven institutes with one thousand students and seventy teachers.
This meeting reaffirms the historical ties between both nations while opening new avenues for closer collaboration at both economic and cultural levels.
