– What are the features of these smart cards?
The most important features stem from its "intelligence," that is, from the fact that it incorporates a microprocessor, which allows information to be stored and processed on the card. This microprocessor can store ticket balances for using the metro, but also, for example, points for using it, similar to loyalty cards, or simply money in the form of an electronic wallet. This opens up new avenues of interaction between the transport company and its customers and, therefore, introduces many marketing opportunities.
– What does it offer over traditional ticketing systems?
These cards, when applied to ticketing, provide speed, reliability, fraud protection, user convenience, and durability.
– How does Indra's technology differ from other existing technologies on the market for this product?
In general, Indra develops and offers comprehensive ticketing solutions: all systems for issuing, canceling, and invoicing tickets, as well as for processing payments. Indra's technology complies with ISO 14443 A/B, an international standard for these types of systems. I would say that what sets Indra apart is its ability to integrate systems, design, and deliver customized projects for each client.
– Is this a specific development for the Paris metro, or does Indra already have this system operating on other railway networks?
Indra has been in the ticketing sector for many years and currently holds a leading position in smart card systems. However, this project for the Paris Metro is a custom development for our client. Indra's references in contactless card-based ticketing systems include projects for the urban and intercity bus company EMTSAM in Malaga, the Lisbon Metro, the Shanghai Metro, and the Santiago Metro in Chile, among others.
– What are the project deadlines, in terms of dates?
The project includes a design, prototype manufacturing, testing, and installation phase for 40 pre-production units, which will take place over eleven months. Once these units reach the contract reliability, we will supply up to 1200 units at a rate of 200 per month.
– How many people are currently working on the project?
The project team is multidisciplinary, comprising software engineers, hardware engineers, mechanical engineers, production engineers, and reliability engineers, as well as managers and coordinators. In total, 10 people are dedicated to the project.
– What has Indra's investment been in this development?
The investment in this development can be estimated at around one million euros.
– Are there any projects for this type of transport ticket in Spain?
Major Spanish cities are in the process of defining their smart card payment systems for public transport. Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia are expected to implement them soon. To date, Indra has implemented the EMTSAM system in Malaga, which has been operating successfully for several years, and the Siroco project for the ATM (Metropolitan Transport Authority) of Barcelona.
