The Connecting Europe Days 2024 , held in Brussels , provided the setting for Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port Authority of Algeciras (APBA), to express his positive assessment of the recent awarding of the contract for track renewal on a 43-kilometer section of the Algeciras-Bobadilla line between Ronda and Antequera . Landaluce believes this represents a significant boost to the modernization of the Algeciras-Bobadilla line, a doubly important project given its connection to both the Atlantic and Mediterranean Corridors . However, he added that "a fundamental issue remains pending: the resolution of the Environmental Impact Statement necessary to ensure the viability of electrifying the track. This is vital for the sustainability of the logistics chain demanded by our clients and for the competitiveness of rail traffic originating from the Port of Algeciras."

The Connecting Europe Days 2024 have, among other objectives, the launch of modifications to the 9 Corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) , which extends towards neighboring countries such as Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova and the partners in the Western Balkans.

The APBA team in Brussels participated in the presentation by the Government Commissioner for the Mediterranean Corridor, Josep Vicent Boira , who highlighted the importance of the Port of Algeciras in global logistics chains. Boira, along with the Director of Strategy and Transformation of Ukrainian Railways, Oleg Yakovenko, emphasized the importance of connecting the two ends of the Mediterranean Corridor— Lviv (Ukraine) and Algeciras—with standard gauge track.

Taking advantage of the presence of the Commissioner for Transport, Adina Valean; the Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente; and the Secretary General for Air and Maritime Transport, Benito Núñez, the Port of Algeciras raised not only the urgent need to improve the Port of Algeciras' land connectivity , but also possible modifications and solutions to the Emissions Trading System (ETS). This issue was raised yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, during the informal EU Council of Ministers meeting, with the aim of urging the European Commission to review the Directive on emissions from maritime transport given its impact on European ports.

Puente, in a meeting sponsored by Spain in which he expressed his support for ports in the face of the risk of loss of competitiveness that the rule entails, presented a declaration to the 17 participating Member States to urge the Commission to activate measures to mitigate the consequences. negative ETS, in force since January 1. The objective is to create a joint data collection network, identify risks and activate short-term initiatives to stop the diversion of ships to third country ports. With the aim of creating an Observatory, the APBA has been working on this line for months together with State Ports and other Spanish and European Port Authorities.
