Together with the low-cost airline Vueling
The airline alliances Oneworld, which includes Iberia, and Star Alliance, which includes Spanair, will share the space of the new South Terminal at Barcelona airport, as announced at a press conference by the director of airports at AENA, Javier Marín.
Marín pointed out that, along with these two alliances, the low-cost airline Vueling and a group of intercontinental operators not included in the two alliances that have been awarded the South Terminal will also have space in the new terminal, which will also have a specific space for the Barcelona-Madrid air bridge.
The AENA executive also noted that some companies operationally linked to airline groups, such as Clickair and Air Nostrum (Oneworld) and Air Comet and Aerolíneas Argentinas (Star Alliance), will also operate from the South Terminal.
AENA's airport director also specified that the third alliance of companies that was vying for the new South Terminal, SkyTeam, which includes Air Europa, will nevertheless have a specific space in the North Terminal.
Marín explained that, for the allocation of spaces in the South Terminal, the largest market share of the two alliances, the largest number of connections and the largest number of routes were taken into account.
The aim is to ensure the growth of Barcelona airport and its connectivity to develop a "hub" type airport, favoring international and intercontinental routes.
In the case of Vueling, consideration was also given to its number of important destinations and its willingness to enter into connectivity agreements with major alliances to participate in long-haul connection mechanisms.
Javier Marín clarified that AENA may change this allocation of spaces in the South Terminal "at any time" if changes occur in the companies' strategies.
