Openness vs. protectionism: the EU in the face of the new global economic context

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise calls for the information session “Openness vs. protectionism: the UE in the face of the new global economic context"which will be held on May 21th 2025, from 11:00 to 11:45, in the auditorium of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise (Pº de la Castellana, 162, Madrid).

This briefing is being held within the framework of the  Open Government Week 2025 and has the participation as a speaker of Julian Conthe Yoldi, Director General of Trade Policy of the State Secretariat of Trade, and with Francisco J. Garzón Morales, Deputy Director General of Communications of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise, as the person in charge of leading the conversation.

In a world where international trade is tending toward fragmentation and some countries are resorting to protectionist policies, the European Union finds itself at a crossroads.

How can we continue to invest in an open trade model in a more competitive and protectionist environment? While seeking to reindustrialize and secure its strategic autonomy, the UE must make key decisions that will affect its role in the world and the economic future of its citizens.

During this conversation we will explore how these tensions impact the UE, what role our most important trading partners play, and why this is important for new generations.
