ACCIONA Energía has unveiled an ambitious project that will position it at the forefront of energy management in Latin America. The company has announced the construction of a 1 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Malgarida photovoltaic complex, located in the Atacama Desert, Chile.

The project, scheduled to begin operations in early 2027, is poised to become one of the most important large-scale energy storage systems in the region. The BESS, associated with the photovoltaic plant Malgarida (of 238 MWp), will have a power of 200 MWwhich will allow it to supply that amount of energy for a period of five hours.
BESS technology will allow ACCIONA Energy to store, manage and dispatch the solar energy generated during daylight hours in Malgarida, making it possible to use it even at night.
"This will allow the photovoltaic energy produced in Malgarida to be stored, managed and dispatched at different times, ensuring that the clean energy generated by the plant during the day can also be used at night," the company says.
In this way, the system will contribute directly to the reducing dependence on fossil fuels and, therefore, to the reduction of emissions of CO2 associated with electricity generation.
Leadership in Renewables and Project Portfolio
The Malgarida project is a testament to ACCIONA Energía's commitment to the Chilean energy sector. With this initiative, the company seeks to optimize the management of its installed capacity in the country, which amounts to 922 MWThis capacity is currently distributed across three wind farms (Punta Palmeras, San Gabriel and Tolpán Sur) and five photovoltaic plants (El Romero, Usya, Almeyda and Malgarida).
In addition to the 1 GWh project, the company is developing a portfolio of three additional storage projects, linked to its photovoltaic plants in Chile, totaling 1,5GWh.
BESS systems at scale utility are considered crucial for the efficient integration of renewable energiesBy enabling the supply of clean energy during peak demand and harnessing the country's abundant solar resource, these systems significantly strengthen the security and stability of the national electricity supply.
