The RIU Hotels & Resorts chain is poised to have all seven of its hotels in Jamaica operational by the end of 2025, marking a significant step in the recovery of the island's main economic engine following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa. This reactivation is further bolstered by the return of charter flights from key markets such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, thanks to the commitment of Sunwing and TUI to the Caribbean destination.

Jamaica has focused its efforts on overcoming the crisis caused by Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island on October 28th. In this context, RIU has worked intensively on two fronts: the assistance to its more than 4.000 employees and fine-tuning of its facilities in record time.
The hotels are being reopened in phases. Riu Ocho Rios, located in one of the areas least affected by the storm, It never closed and is now offering all its services. The week of the news has been key to the relaunch, with the opening of the Riu Montego Bay Last Sunday, November 23rd. Today, Monday November 24th’s most emblematic landmarks, the Riu Palace Jamaica has reopened its doors, reintroducing the product premium liquors of the chain at this initial stage. The four remaining establishments —Riu Reggae, Riu Negril, Riu Palace Tropical Bay and the recent Riu Palace Aquarelle— their openings are planned to be staggered between the November 30 and December 15, 2025.
The Spanish hotel chain's technical and operational team faced significant challenges, such as restoration of basic water and electricity serviceswhich have already been resolved in all complexes.
RIU's social commitment to its employees and communities
The chain's strategy, called Proudly Committed, has focused primarily on its staff. RIU has mobilized a fund of $1.000.000 (USD)80% of which has been channeled directly to the workers. This support includes 570.000 USD for housing reconstruction materials and 230.000 USD in immediate aid packages with essential items. Additionally, the chain has facilitated a line of credit of $1.300.000 USD interest-free to help them manage the damages suffered.
Beyond its staff, the hotel chain has extended its support to isolated communities in Jamaica. In collaboration with the Jamaica Basic School Foundation, have been donated 200.000 USD in humanitarian aid, providing 1.750 support packages. RIU has also partnered with the NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK) to prepare and distribute more than 7.000 solidarity meals daily From Negril and Montego Bay. This initiative not only provides hot meals to the most affected areas, but also offers a source of temporary employment to its own workers while the return to normal operations is completed.
With 24 years of presence in the destination, Jamaica is fundamental for RIU in the Caribbean, with more than 4.000 rooms spread across Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Falmouth. The opening of the Riu Palace Aquarelle Last year is a clear example of strong and continuous commitment of the chain with the country.
