Spain and Türkiye strengthen their strategic agri-food collaboration

Spain and Turkey have given a new and significant boost to their bilateral cooperation in agriculture, signing agreements to strengthen collaboration in vital areas such as research, technology, agricultural insurance and rural development, with special emphasis on the necessary generational renewal.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Spain, louis planesand Turkey's Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim YumaklıThey led the second meeting in Ankara of the Monitoring Committee of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between both countries in 2013.

 

The meeting served to revitalize the MOU, highlighting the value of the bilateral relationship. Minister Planas underlined the shared commitment of “Moving towards a sustainable, innovative and profitable agricultural model” that can face global challenges.

 

In the scientific field, the delegations identified new and promising opportunities for collaboration, especially in critical areas such as adaptation to climate change and plant improvementJoint lines of work will be promoted in: Plant improvement; Agronomic trials andgenetic modification applied to agriculture.

 

These technologies are considered key to the development of more resilient and sustainable crops. Planas emphasized the importance of the knowledge transfer to farmers and ranchers so that agricultural research truly shapes the future of the sector.

 

Spain, a leader in agricultural insurance

 

A central point of the meeting was cooperation in agricultural insuranceSpain, which has one of the most advanced public-private systems in the world, has established itself as a benchmark for the Turkish model.

 

Türkiye expressed its interest in continuing technical cooperation with Spain to strengthen and diversify its own insurance system. Minister Planas emphasized that “Agricultural insurance is a key tool to strengthen the sector’s resilience to climate change” and reaffirmed Spain's willingness to share its experience.

 

Key Areas for Competitiveness

 

Beyond research and insurance, the meeting reviewed the set of cooperation areas of the MOU, which include: Plant and livestock production; marketing and agricultural technologies; rural development and generational renewal; modernization of irrigation and digitalization.

 

Both delegations agreed on the need to promote these areas in order to improve sustainability and competitiveness of the agricultural sector in both countries. Following the follow-up meeting, Spain and Turkey expressed their firm commitment to continue building more sustainable, innovative food models prepared for future challenges.
