El Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation is in the final stages of developing a new Strategy for Africa, which is expected to be approved in September 2024. This initiative seeks to consolidate Africa as a strategic priority for Spain, highlighting the importance of the region in terms of security, sustainable development and safe mobility. The Strategy places special emphasis on West Africa and the Sahel, and has been developed through a consultative process that includes governments, organizations, companies and civil society in both Africa and Spain.
Spain wants to accompany the economic and social transformation of African countries, with a focus on youth
The focus of the Strategy is on five key objectives: strengthen bilateral relations, promote joint growth with an emphasis on youth, improve the connection between the societies and economies of both continents, protect the most vulnerable and promote open and inclusive societies. In addition, a series of 100 concrete actions are proposed to implement these objectives, including greater multilateral cooperation at the level of the ONU, the G20 and European Union.
Spain seeks to position itself as a leader in relations with Africa, taking advantage of its geographical proximity and its role in key sectors such as infrastructure, energy, fishing and cultural and educational cooperation. This strategy also highlights the importance of the Spanish language on the continent, with a growing demand for language learning.
