She is followed by the liberal leader, Elena Lasconi, who came in second thanks to the support of 19,2% of the electorate. The result is a real political earthquake since neither of the two candidates was among the favourites in the polls. Georgescu, a relatively unknown politician, has called for ending aid to Ukraine, has been highly critical of the presence of the base of the NATO in her country and has declared her admiration for Hungarian President Viktor Orban, for knowing how to assert the interests of his country. Lasconi, a centre-right journalist, won by just 1.000 votes over the Socialist prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu, which would be excluded from the second round of the elections, scheduled for December 8. The elections took place against a backdrop of discontent with the status quo, while Ciolacu's coalition government faced accusations of corruption and mismanagement.

The candidate who wins the election will occupy the most powerful post in Romania, holding the power to appoint the prime minister, initiate negotiations for the formation of coalitions or competencies in matters of national security and foreign policy. Romania also holds legislative elections next Sunday, December 1, when the composition of the parliament will be decided. Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, which could mark the beginning of a new political cycle in the country.
