Recently, a significant meeting took place in the Port of Algeciras between representatives of the port and the Costa Rican delegation headed by Laura Lopez, the new CEO of PROCOMER (Foreign Trade Promoter of Costa Rica), together with Jorge Zamora, commercial director for Europe. This event strengthens the commercial ties established almost a decade ago between both entities.

Costa Rica is one of the main trading partners of the Port of Algeciras in terms of reefer traffic, thanks to the weekly export of products such as pineapple, banana, tubers and plants from the Port of Moin. These products supply the European market through the service MedCaribe operated by shipping companies CMA-CGM and Marfret, which guarantee a direct transit time with Algeciras of only 12 days.

This meeting underlines the strategic importance of the Port of Algeciras as a logistics hub for Costa Rican products destined for the European market.

During their visit, López and Zamora held meetings with key figures of the port such as Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port; Manuel Cózar, President of the Freight Forwarders; Guillermo Teba, Provincial Director of Trade; and Leyre González, Head of the Phytosanitary Service of the Border Control Post (PCF). The main objective was Improve customs controls which already benefit from integration into a single health service.

Since formal relations were established almost ten years ago between the Port Authority of Algeciras and PROCOMER, the port has emerged as an essential gateway to Europe not only for Costa Rican pineapples but also bananas, coffee and medical devices. Netherlands and Belgium stand out as the main European destinations for these products.
