Canary Islands and Mauritania have established a strategic alliance to address common challenges through sustainability, technology and innovation. The ten projects they are carrying out together, with the support of the program Interreg MAC and an investment of almost 30 million euros, cover various key sectors for the development of both territories.

One of the main axes of this collaboration is the sustainable management of natural resources. Initiatives are being implemented to improve water sanitation, modernise the fishing sector and promote the use of renewable energy. Work is also being done on integrated waste management, including the regeneration of industrial and agricultural waste through the cultivation of algae.

Another fundamental aspect is the promotion of training and employment. A programme has been launched program to train workers in Mauritania, with the aim of improving their employment opportunities and discouraging irregular migration to Europe.

The Interreg MAC presentation day was organised jointly by the governments of the Canary Islands and Mauritania, with the aim of strengthening the progress of the projects in progress and preparing the new call for proposals that will be launched before the summer.

Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canary Islands, said: "These projects are an example of how collaboration between regions can generate innovative and sustainable solutions to shared challenges. We are very pleased to work alongside Mauritania on these initiatives that will contribute to improving the quality of life of its citizens and boosting the development of both territories."

For its part, Sid'Ahmed Bouh, Minister of Economy and Finance of Mauritania, he said: "We appreciate the commitment of the Canary Islands and the European Union to the development of Mauritania. These projects are of great importance for our country and we are sure that they will help us to advance in priority areas such as the management of natural resources, job creation and the fight against irregular migration."
