GMV revolutionizes maritime security in the Portuguese ports of Aveiro and Figueira da Foz

Newsroom Tuesday, February 25, 2025 Reading time:

In a momentous move for maritime safety, the Port Authority of Aveiro (APA) and the Port Authority of Figueira da Foz (APFF) have entrusted GMV, a European technology giant and world leader in navigation systems, with an ambitious modernisation of their Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) systems.

The initiative responds to the growing need for surveillance and control in the port areas, where he maritime traffic requires increasingly sophisticated systems. VTS, comparable to air traffic control towers, are essential for monitoring the movement of vessels, preventing accidents and minimising environmental impact.

"This modernisation is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety of our navigation," said an APA spokesperson. "With GMV technology, we will be able to respond more efficiently to any eventuality, protecting both people and the environment."

The solution implemented by GMV is based on the rigorous standards of the International Organization for Aids to Navigation (IALA), and incorporates solid-state X-band radars, capable of providing precise detection even in adverse visibility and weather conditions.

This project seeks to raise safety standards in navigation and optimize communication with rescue and salvage services.

The new VTS system will include:

  • State-of-the-art solid-state radars.
  • Radio Direction Finding (RDF) Technology.
  • Automatic Identification System (AIS) stations.
  • VHF radio communication system.
  • Recording and storage of data (video and audio).
  • Weather stations.

One of the most notable innovations is remote access via the web, which will allow authorized operators to monitor maritime traffic from any location. In addition, pilots will have remote monitoring units Portable Pilot Unit (PPU) for direct monitoring from vessels.

"The ability to access information in real time, from anywhere, makes a significant difference in our operations," said a port pilot. Figueira da Foz"PPUs provide us with an invaluable tool for decision-making on board."

With more than four decades of experience, GMV has established itself as a leader in navigation, security and control solutions for critical sectors such as aerospace, defense and transportation. Its history of innovation and its commitment to research and development have been key to its success.

"At GMV, we are proud to contribute to maritime safety with cutting-edge technology," said a GMV representative. "This project reinforces our commitment to delivering solutions that optimize operations and protect lives."

This project represents a milestone in the modernisation of Portuguese port infrastructure and a significant advance in navigation safety.
