European project 'Nexomar'

Andalusian Ports and Chambers of Commerce promote cross-border logistics cooperation with Portugal

Seville, Huelva, and Algeciras are joining the European "Nexomar" project to strengthen maritime and logistics activities with the Alentejo and Algarve regions, enhancing the Euroregion's strategic position on the global stage.

El Andalusian Council of Chambers of Commerce and ports of Seville, Algeciras and Huelva have made official their adhesion to the European project'Nexomar', an initiative aimed at promoting the cross-border collaboration and harness the geostrategic potential of Andalucía and the Portuguese region of Alentejo-Algarve in the global maritime sector. The signing of the agreement, which took place at an event attended by prominent industry leaders, marks a milestone in logistics cooperation between the two regions.


The main objective of the 'Nexomar' project is to promote innovation and cooperation between the port areas of Andalusia and Portugal, through the generation of synergies and strategic alliances. This collaboration seeks to optimize the use of shared resources and promote joint initiatives among key players in the logistics and maritime sectors.


"Public-private collaboration is essential for port and logistics development," he said. Javier Sánchez Rojas, president of the Andalusian Chambers of Commerce, underscoring the importance of the innovative and cooperative tools that Nexomar brings to the business community. He also highlighted the potential of the Atlantic coastline shared by Andalusia and southern Portugal.
Rafael Carmona, president of the Port Authority of Seville, highlighted the crucial role of Andalusian ports and chambers of commerce in 'Nexomar' and announced the implementation of studies to improve logistical efficiency between the two countries. "It is key to strengthen logistical ties, especially with the daily rail connection between the Port of Seville and Sines," Carmona noted.


Alberto Santana, president of the Port Authority of Huelva, highlighted that "the participation of the Port of Huelva in the Nexomar project together with other Andalusian and Portuguese port authorities, the Andalusian Council of Chambers and other chamber and business institutions, the Portuguese University of Évora, constitutes an opportunity to generate synergies under the premise of innovation and technological advances applied to the logistics and port sector in a highly competitive global economy, especially the international logistics chain, subject to international political circumstances, all with the main objective of boosting maritime logistics activity in the territory and fostering internationalization and increasing the foreign presence of companies."


Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port Authority of the Bay of AlgecirasHe emphasized the role of ports in the "Nexomar" strategy, highlighting the importance of public-private collaboration to boost business competitiveness. He also stressed the need to optimize the supply of industrial land and build an integrated business ecosystem for SMEs.


The 'Nexomar' project has led to seven strategic studies in areas such as sustainability, intermodality, and rail connections, and has launched an observatory to identify business opportunities. Upcoming initiatives include a cross-border meeting of logistics services and the development of projects in areas such as digitalization, sustainability and internationalization.


'Nexomar' has the participation of nine partners, including the Andalusian Council of Chambers, regional chambers and business entities from Andalusia, as well as Portuguese institutions such as Sines Tecnopolo and the University of Évora. The project, co-financed by the European Union, seeks to consolidate the Euroregion as a driver of economic development and international competitiveness.
