Spain and Greece strengthen their trade alliance to address geopolitical challenges and explore investments.

In a strategic move to consolidate their economic relations and address a complex geopolitical scenario, more than 100 business leaders from Spain and Greece gathered at the CEOE headquarters in Madrid.

The meeting, focused on exploring investment opportunities in the Greek market, was inaugurated by the Secretary of State for Trade of Spain, Amparo López Senovilla, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic Diplomacy and Outward-Looking of Greece, Tasos Chatzivasileiou.

 

The business forum, organized by CEOE in collaboration with the Secretary of State for Trade, ICEX and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, sought to cement closer cooperation in the face of challenges such as rising protectionism, the Trump administration's economic policies, the transition to a sustainable growth model, and the reorganization of global value chains.

 

Amparo López Senovilla He emphasized the mutual commitment as European partners "to economic security and improved competitiveness," noting Spain's intention to "deepen" collaboration. "We are at an opportune moment on a bilateral level, both to increase trade and business cooperation through direct investment," he stated, also alluding to "new joint opportunities in third markets."

 

For its part, Tasos Chatzivasileiou He described Spain as "one of Greece's most important allies," emphasizing the "shared values ​​and principles" that should lead to "building a common investment destiny and developing strategic synergies in sectors such as the digital economy, technology, agri-food, and healthcare." He emphasized the need for Europe to make progress in improving its "economic, fiscal, and financial stability" to ensure the effectiveness of this alliance.

 

The Forum sought to cement closer cooperation in the face of challenges such as rising protectionism, the Trump administration's economic policies, the transition to a sustainable growth model, and the reorganization of global value chains.

 

Marta White, president of the CEOE International Relations Commission, highlighted the importance of both countries "working together in a context of enormous international challenges"and the need to "make the most of the single European market." Blanco mentioned the "many similarities in the economic and commercial spheres" and the "very positive economic performance" of both nations, as well as the "enormous complementarity in sectors such as industry and technology."

 

Influential voices such as Sofia Kounenaki-Efraimoglou, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Athens, and Jaime Montalvo, director of international affairs at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, agreed on the urgency of strengthening the European project and public-private collaboration. Montalvo highlighted the joint work on "a green, digital, and sustainable agenda." Vicky Makrigianni, of the Hellenic Federation of Businesses, urged "working hand in hand to achieve the efficient transformation of our economies."

 

The meeting also served as a platform to present business and investment opportunities in Greece, with testimonials from Enterprise Greece, the Spanish-Hellenic Chamber, Iberdrola Renovables Internacional and Acuidelta, who highlighted the existing synergies.

 

The figures support this rapprochement: between 2020 and 2024, bilateral trade between Spain and Greece grew by 118,78%, reaching €3.443,7 billion in 2024. Spain ranks as Greece's ninth-largest supplier, while Greece is the eighth-largest market for Spanish imports, with €1.203 billion.
