Lorenzana meets with Norwegian company Seafood Legacy: Galicia will have its first salmon plant by the end of the year

The confirmation came after a meeting in Oslo between the Regional Minister of Economy and Industry, María Jesús Lorenzana, and executives from the Norwegian company Seafood Legacy. Construction is expected to begin later this year.

Galicia will take a significant step forward in its aquaculture sector with the upcoming construction of the region's first salmon farming plant.

 

The ambitious project, which will be located in the port of Burela, in the province of Lugo, represents a investment of 80 million eurosThe Xunta de Galicia will foreseeably contribute around 30 millones de euros to promote this initiative.

 

The plant will have an area of ​​approximately 20.000m² and aims to produce some 3.300 tons of salmon per yearIn addition to its productive capacity, it is estimated that it will generate up to a hundred Job positions direct and indirect, which represents a considerable economic boost for the region.

 

Councilor Lorenzana expressed her satisfaction with the news, calling it "very good news, as expected in Burela, and a real source of satisfaction for us because it is yet another industrial project being established in Galicia, one that has confidence in and is committed to Galicia."

 

This new Seafood Legacy facility is seen as a plus for the Galician aquaculture sector, which will include salmon production in its offering for the first time. The plant joins others already operating in the region, managed by companies such as Stolt Sea Farm, Nueva Pescanova, and Profand, also based in Norway.

 

Galicia is a powerhouse in the aquaculture sector, with a total of 2.510 companies that employ 4.460 people. The hatchery, marine farms and cultivation lines segment is the second most important source of income, with 618 people employed (14% of total employment) and a turnover exceeding 137 millones de euros, representing more than 47% of the sector's total €290 million.
