Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez met at La Moncloa Palace with senior executives from the Japanese multinational Hitachi, with the aim of strengthening the company's commitment to Spain's industrial and technological development.

The meeting was attended by Andrew Barr, Hitachi Executive Vice President and President of Hitachi Europe; Carlos Mezquita, general manager of Hitachi Rail Spain; and Alfredo García-Borreguero, general manager of Hitachi Energy Spain.
During the meeting, President Sánchez highlighted Hitachi's long-standing relationship with Spain, dating back to 1930, and analyzed the Japanese group's investments in key sectors for the Spanish economy. Special emphasis was placed on the collaboration opportunities in the manufacture of essential electrical equipment for the generation of renewable energy, as well as in strategic areas such as railways and research, development and innovation (R&D&I).
This meeting underscores the mutual interest in strengthening ties and exploring new avenues of collaboration that drive innovation and economic growth in Spain.
Hitachi, an electronics and industrial giant, currently employs 2.500 people in Spain and operates in various segments. In the field of rail mobility, Hitachi Rail has laboratories in Madrid dedicated to software production, testing, and validation, traffic control, and maintenance centers, consolidating their leadership in infrastructure modernization.
For its part, Hitachi Energy plays a crucial role in the Spanish energy transition. It has two production centers in Córdoba and Zaragoza, a service center in Vizcaya, and engineering units in Madrid and BarcelonaThe company has strengthened its commitment to Spain with significant investments: it recently announced €30 million to expand its electrical equipment factory in Zaragoza, which is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. This is in addition to an €80 million investment announced last year to expand the Córdoba plant through 2027.
In addition, Hitachi Digital Services has software centers in Valencia and Malaga, demonstrating the multinational's commitment to digital services. Hitachi's presence in Spain even extends to the healthcare sector, with a subsidiary dedicated to photonic integrated circuits and particle therapy for cancer treatment.
