The Port of Barcelona strengthens economic and logistical ties with Algeria

A delegation from the Port of Barcelona, ​​led by its Deputy Director General and Head of Sales and Marketing, Carla Salvadó, concluded a business trip to Algeria, with the firm goal of strengthening economic and logistical relations between the two regions.

The effort seeks to relaunch maritime connectivity and reposition the Catalan port as a key partner for Euro-Mediterranean trade.

 

During their stay, representatives from the Port of Barcelona, ​​accompanied by companies from the Port Community, held a series of crucial meetings with institutional authorities and economic stakeholders from the North African country. The agenda included meetings with the ambassador of Spain in Algeria, officials from the Ministry of Transport, various business associations, as well as Algerian importers and exporters. The visit culminated with a tour of the Port of Algiers.

 

The central point of this trade mission was the seminar "Le Port de Barcelona, ​​trait d'union between l'Algérie et l'Europe", held on Thursday, June 12, in the Algerian capital. With this trip, the Port of Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to internationalization and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation, consolidating its position as a leading logistics hub between Europe and North Africa.


Algeria: A Historic and Vital Trading Partner

 

The Port of Barcelona, ​​one of the main logistics hubs in southern Europe and a strategic connection point with northern Africa, seeks to revitalize its relationship with Algeria. This country had been among the port's top five trading partners annually until 2021, reaching second place in 2018 and 2019.

 

Diplomatic tensions in 2022 significantly impacted trade, causing a 97% drop in exports from the Port of Barcelona to Algeria. However, following the resumption of diplomatic relations at the end of 2024, the port has seen a progressive improvement in traffic, particularly in products such as paper and cardboard, and chemicals such as ethylene and propylene polymers.


Recovery of Maritime Connections and Future Opportunities

 

Currently, the Port of Barcelona is actively working to recover and enhance maritime connections with Algerian ports such as those of Algiers and Djen DjenShipping companies such as CMA CGM are already promoting new regular routes, crucial for facilitating the export and import of industrial, agricultural, energy, and logistics products between the two countries.
