In a strategic move that consolidates Spain's position in the global technology landscape, Google Cloud has announced the construction of "Sol," a new submarine cable that will directly connect Santander to the east coast of the United States.

This project, which adds to the company's global network infrastructure, will not only increase the capacity and resilience of transatlantic communications, but also strengthens the Region of Madrid as a nerve center for digital innovation and artificial intelligence in Europe.

The new link, developed in collaboration with Telxius, will unite Santander with Florida, with stops at Azores and Bermuda, establishing itself as the only direct connection of its kind. This cable is expected to significantly reduce latency, a crucial factor for the operation of critical applications and AI services, improving the experience for businesses and users.

The arrival of "Sol" will boost the Google Cloud region in Madrid, operational since 2022. This infrastructure has allowed Spanish companies and public administrations to manage data and processes more efficiently, complying with European regulations. With the new transatlantic connection, the Madrid region is uniquely positioned compared to other European capitals, attracting investment and facilitating the adoption of advanced technologies such as generative AI.

This commitment of Google with Spain became evident during the Google Cloud Summit Madrid 2025, held in May in IFEMA, which brought together more than 6,000 professionals. The economic impact of artificial intelligence was highlighted during the event. An Esade study, presented at the meeting, projected that AI could increase public administration productivity by 9% over the next decade, generating up to €7,000 billion annually.

In addition to the investment in infrastructure, Google has allocated one million dollars to research in collaboration with the CSIC and has launched new mass training programs to boost digital talent in the country. With these initiatives, Madrid consolidates its position as one of Europe's leading technology hubs, leading the transition toward a more connected, competitive, and intelligent economy.
