The trip is part of the event Costa Rica Trade & Investment Summit 2025, where the delegation from the Andalusian port seeks to strengthen ties and explore new business opportunities. The mission's agenda is intense and highlights the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in 2019 with the Costa Rican Foreign Trade Promoter (PROCOMER), a key step to formalize and expand collaboration.

One of the most notable initiatives of the week is the presentation of the Digital Interoperability Project, which seeks to connect the Central American Digital Trade Platform (PDCC) with the Port Community System (PCS) of the Port of AlgecirasThis project is aligned with the strategy EU Global Gateway, whose purpose is to create more efficient and secure logistics chains. The initiative, which has been the subject of intensive work with the Secretariat for Central American Economic Integration (SIECA), will facilitate trade by improving transparency, traceability, and inspection of goods entering Europe through Algeciras. The presentation event, organized by the European Commission, is titled "Central America-EU: Smart Connectivity for Smoother Trade."

The main objective of the Port of Algeciras is to consolidate the close commercial relationship with the Central American country, its main partner in the handling of refrigerated goods, and to renew a fundamental agreement for bilateral trade.

Since 2020, Costa Rica has become the Port of Algeciras' main trading partner in the refrigerated goods sector. Much of this traffic consists of the import of products such as pineapple and banana, which previously arrived in Spain through other European ports. In turn, the Andalusian port is a key route for Andalusian olive oil exports to the Costa Rican market. This year, 2025, marks a decade since the beginning of trade relations between the two parties.

Direct connectivity between the Port of Moin in Costa Rica and the Port of Algeciras It is carried out through the MedCaribe service, operated by the shipping companies CMA-CGM and Marfret, with a transit time of just 12 days. Every week, hundreds of containers of fresh produce such as pineapple, bananas, tubers, and plants are shipped from Moín to supply the European market, reinforcing Algeciras's position as a first-class logistics hub for this type of goods.
