This agreement establishes the priorities of the Spanish cooperation in the Nile country for the coming years, with a focus on key areas such as economic development, climate change, gender equality, and improving public services.
The signing takes place within the framework of the State visit of the King and Queen of Spain to Egypt, which underlines the excellent moment of bilateral relations. Just six months ago, the two countries elevated their relationship to the level of Strategic Partnership, a milestone that is now strengthened with this new agreement.
"This agreement not only consolidates our current commitments, but also paves the way for us to jointly address future challenges and offers a model of reference for the world of cooperation," Minister Albares emphasized, emphasizing the importance of this alliance for long-term collaboration.
A priority country for Spanish cooperation
Egypt is considered a priority country for Spanish cooperation. The Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID) has significantly increased its disbursement in the country, going from 2,6 million euros in 2022 to 4,8 million in 2024. This upward trend is expected to continue with the implementation of the new alliance.
The Alliance for Sustainable Development will focus on three fundamental transitions: social, ecological, and economic. Through these, it will seek to strengthen public institutions, generate employment, improve water management, and protect natural spaces. A fundamental pillar of the alliance is the promotion of gender equality, promoting women's rights and their full participation in all spheres of society.
A new model of cooperation
This agreement with Egypt is an example of Spain's new strategic approach to development cooperation. Partnerships for Sustainable Development, such as the one signed with Egypt and previously with Uruguay, seek to go beyond traditional formulas. They are built on a mutual commitment, joining forces with partner countries to promote shared priorities such as employment, social cohesion, human rights, and multilateralism.
With the signing of this agreement, Spain and Egypt not only strengthen their bilateral relationship but also position themselves as key partners in addressing the global challenges of the 2030 Agenda, working together for a more just and sustainable future for both peoples.
