The Vice-Minister of the Presidency and President of Proexca, Alfonso Cabello, led the delegation and highlighted to more than 300 international professionals the "mature business ecosystem" that already exists on the islands.

During his speech, Cabello emphasized that the rapid growth of this industry in the Canary Islands is due to three fundamental pillars: local talent, competitive advantages, and public-private partnerships. Despite its recent rise, the sector has been declared strategic by the Canary Islands government, experiencing such rapid development that it has become a model for other autonomous communities in Spain.

"The Canary Islands are now the fourth autonomous community in Spain chosen by professionals in this industry, only behind Madrid, Catalonia and Andalusia" Cabello stated, thanking local businesses, freelancers, and entrepreneurs for their efforts in positioning the islands on the global gaming map.

A joint effort that bears fruit

La trade mission, led by Proexca, has noted the growing international interest in the Canary Islands sector. An example of the success of this collaboration is the project between the Japanese company Route24 and the Canary Islands studio Quantum Box Studio, an alliance that was born in the 2024 edition of the Tokyo Game Show and which marks a milestone in the history of the archipelago. Kenichi Nishi, CEO of Route24, and Sergio Prieto, from Quantum Box, shared the stage to talk about the joint development of their video game 'Kiriko, The Mystic'.

Eight Canarian companies are participating in the trade mission to Japan: Drakhar Studio, Factoría de Innovación, Foxter Studio, Fundación Canaria, Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, MoonMana Games, Rising Pixel, and Quantum Box Studio. They will also be present at the Tokyo Game Show starting this Thursday.

The opening event also featured two internationally renowned video game experts: composer Yuzo Koshiro and developer Hidetaka Suehiro, who gave a panel discussion on the importance of music and storytelling in the industry.

Institutional support and future

Alfonso Cabello guaranteed continued institutional support to this sector, reaffirming the commitment of the Canary Islands Government to accompany companies in their international expantionThe delegation also held key meetings at the Spanish Embassy in Japan, with the support of Gonzalo Ramos Puig, Chief Counselor of the Spanish Trade Office in Tokyo, and Íñigo de Palacio, the Spanish Ambassador.

This foray into Japan, under the brand Canary Island Games, underscores the image of public-private unity that drives the development of this strategic sector for the islands' economic diversification. The Tokyo Game Show 2025 promises to be the largest edition in its history, bringing together 772 exhibitors and projecting an attendance of more than 250,000 visitors, representing a unique opportunity for Canarian companies to seek global partners and investors.
