This project, of a critical nature, is the first to be developed within the Framework Agreement "Airfield and Landside Civil Works Framework", with a total duration of five years. The main objective of the infrastructure is to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of airport operations.
The underground passageway, necessary to facilitate safe and continuous access, will connect Pier 3 with the West Platform, in the center of the airport's airfield, and will reduce travel times for both cargo operations and other airport activities between the West Platform and East Campus.
The project is the first to be developed within the framework agreement "Airfield and Landside Civil Works Framework", which has a total duration of five years and is critical to improving the safety and efficiency of the aerodrome operation.
Technical details of the work
The double-cell tunnel will be 700 meters long, with a total length of 1,1 kilometers. The project will run beneath key operational areas, including runway 16/34 and taxiways W1, W2, F2, and taxiway Apron 4. In addition, a 23.700-square-meter area of the airfield will be reconfigured to facilitate the project. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2030.
Alejandro MendozaSacyr's Director of Operations in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Sweden, expressed his enthusiasm: "We are excited to collaborate with the DAA on this project to improve access and security at Dublin Airport, which will help meet the needs of its more than 31 million passengers and allow the airport to continue growing as a leading European and transatlantic hub."
For its part, Aidan McCaulWills Bros. Contracts Director, highlighted the significance of the award: "We are delighted to have been awarded this critical project for the DAA. As a family-owned business with over 53 years of experience, our in-house delivery model has enabled us to successfully deliver complex civil engineering projects across Ireland. It's worth noting that Sacyr and Wills Bros. have previously collaborated on a major infrastructure project in Northern Ireland: the construction of the A6 Dungiven to Drumahoe road, with a budget of £220 million. Wills Bros. is one of Ireland's leading civil engineering firms, with offices in Foxford (County Mayo) and Dublin.
