Barceló believes that the tourism market in Spain has too much supply for too little demand.

Statements made during the inauguration of the Barceló Sancti Petri

The Secretary General of Barceló Hotels & Resorts, Raúl González, stated that the Spanish tourism market offers a wide range of hotels and leisure activities but has low demand.

González indicated, in a conversation with the media after the inauguration of the five-star Barceló Sancti Petri hotel (Cádiz), that the company, due to this imbalance, "will grow more in the international area than in the national market."

"The Spanish tourism sector is a solid and mature market but with demand that is growing very slowly" compared to the wide supply available, he explained.

Furthermore, the executive opined that the market will undergo a significant process of business concentration because, he said, "so many brands cannot coexist."

As he explained, lower-level hotels will suffer more, which is why Barceló is focusing on luxury hotels or those with "differentiating characteristics," such as the new five-star Barceló Sancti Petri, marketed under the Barceló Premium brand, which the company uses to rate its best accommodations.

González noted that, within the international expansion strategy, "we are looking at projects" in Asia and the Middle East, specifically in the United Arab Emirates, where they are studying the possibility of managing an establishment, as well as including India and Egypt in the next strategic plan.

In the Mediterranean basin, the company is interested in Croatia, although according to González, "it is a very seasonal market," as is Morocco, where they hope to manage two hotels in the next two years.

For their part, emerging markets are becoming increasingly important given their great potential, therefore, as the Secretary General said, "we would like to have significant development in Eastern Europe," where they are strengthening their presence in the Czech Republic.

Over the next two years, the company plans to open new centers in the Americas, as well as manage 20 hotels in the United Kingdom and increase its establishments in Germany, thus strengthening the brand's presence.

Forecasts for this year include adding six more hotels, in Spain and the Caribbean, and, according to González, the objectives will be exceeded, with the expectation of increasing revenue and achieving a "double-digit" profit, the general secretary said.

Recently, the hotel chain opened a new establishment in the province of Cadiz, in the Sancti Petri urbanisation, classified as five stars and with 195 rooms, including four suites.

The hotel, which has been operating since last June, will open 91 aparthotels in the coming days that, due to "adaptation" problems, could not be offered this summer.

The new center, owned by the real estate company Colonial and leased by Barceló Hotels & Resorts, has a 3.650 square meter spa with which it hopes to cope with the winter season.
