Summary of the Foreign Business newsletter – Issue 4.143, January 29, 2025

Greetings, welcome to a new edition of the Empresa Exterior newsletter. Today, January 29, 2025, we review the most important news in international trade, the global economy and business news.

We begin in Brussels, where the European Commission will present its ambitious "Compass for Competitiveness," a key strategy to strengthen the productivity and autonomy of the European Union. This plan aims to boost innovation and competitiveness in the face of powers like China and the United States, laying the foundations for a more robust and resilient European economy.

And now we turn to Asia, where Spain and China face 2025, marked by the "Year of the Wood Snake," a period that experts predict will be full of opportunities for foreign trade. Trade relations between the two countries are strengthening with an increase in exports and new strategic alliances.

At the international level, the European Union has decided to ease sanctions against Syria, albeit with a revocable character. This measure seeks to facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid and to encourage the economic recovery of the country, without compromising the policy of putting pressure on the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Speaking of trade and strategic agreements, Corporación Hijos de Rivera and Destilerías Arehucas have sealed a historic alliance for the distribution of products in the Iberian Peninsula. This agreement will strengthen the presence of the Canarian rum Arehucas in the Spanish and Portuguese markets, consolidating its international expansion.

In the manufacturing sector, Lantek, a leading technology company for the metal industry, is expanding its global presence with the opening of a new subsidiary in Japan. With this initiative, Lantek expands its presence to 16 countries, reaffirming its commitment to innovation and internationalization.

In the field of fashion and footwear, companies from Castilla-La Mancha are preparing to shine at the MICAM I Shoe Event in Milan. The participation of these companies in the renowned fair reinforces the position of the sector in international markets.

We continue with the technology sector, where Europe's digital sovereignty is once again at the centre of the debate. With the possible return of Donald Trump to the US presidency, technological independence becomes an imperative for the European Union. Companies such as Pandora FMS, which was rejected by NASA for not being American, highlight the need to reduce technological dependence on the American giant.

On the other hand, Banco Sabadell and Cesce have announced an innovative debtor assessment service for Spanish companies. This tool seeks to improve the financial management of companies and facilitate their expansion into international markets.

And in the agri-food sector, the Region of Murcia is positioned as a leader in exports of food and non-alcoholic beverages to Saudi Arabia, reaching 40 million euros in exports in 2024. Meanwhile, Spain is strengthening its presence at the IPM Essen fair in Germany, with 31 companies from the ornamental sector exhibiting their products at the leading horticultural event in Europe.

The calendar of events highlights business opportunities for the agri-food sector in the United States and Canada, as well as the Spain-Argentina Business Meeting and Spanish participation in Greencities in Belgium.

This concludes our review of the latest foreign business news. Don't forget to follow us on our social networks and subscribe to receive the latest news. Thank you for your attention and see you next time.
