Spain – Brazil
Several countries, including China, Chile, the European Union and South Korea, have suspended imports of Brazilian meat pending clarification of the scandal involving the export of spoiled products "disguised" from 21 Brazilian slaughterhouses.
Apparently, these slaughterhouses bribed health officials to sell spoiled, unfit-for-consumption meat that was treated with acid to make it look palatable. Although these practices affect a very small number of production plants compared to the total (21 out of 4.837), the sector's reputation has been severely damaged. Brazil is the world's leading exporter of poultry and beef. Meat exports generated approximately $12.000 billion in revenue in 2016.
