Canada has opened consultations with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding legislative changes introduced by the Netherlands and Belgium to prevent the import of seal products.
The measures "appear to be inconsistent with the obligations of the European Community under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994 and the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade," Canada said in its request for consultations.
The North American country wants to challenge measures adopted by Belgium and the Netherlands regarding the import, transport, manufacture, marketing and sale of seal-derived products.
Canada considers these measures to be "violations that appear to nullify or impair the resulting benefits for Canada from those agreements."
Therefore, it requests a response from the European Community to its request for consultations, submitted to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body.
