To make digital television and flat screens compatible
The Chinese government will lead an effort to transform the television industry, which will involve mergers, in order to integrate advanced digital technology and flat-screen televisions.
In this regard, according to the "South China Morning Post" newspaper, Beijing will encourage the three main producers of LCD panels for screens to merge so that they can begin developing large-format panels for digital television sets.
"Our television production sector faces a major challenge," said Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice minister of China's National Development and Reform Commission (the country's top planning body), in statements reported by the Hong Kong newspaper.
This is because China is moving "towards digital television, from the current analog standard, and with an increasing demand for flat screens instead of cathode ray tube televisions," Zhang explained.
Similarly, according to the deputy minister, Chinese producers Shanghai SVA-NEC, BOE Technology Group and InfoVision Optoelectronics are currently negotiating possible mergers or collaborations to jointly develop larger panels.
Meanwhile, TCL and other Shenzhen-based companies are reportedly exploring the possibility of manufacturing 7.5 or 8 generation LCD panels in plants in southern China with foreign partners.
With 90 million cathode ray tube television units, China was the world's leading producer of that technology in 2006, Zhang noted.
