China announced on March 8 the imposition of duty on several Canadian agricultural products, in response to the tariffs that Canada imposed in October 2024 on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum.
These new tariffs will take effect on March 20. The affected products are, with a 100% tariff, rapeseed oil, rapeseed products, and legumes; and, with a 25% tariff, pork and fishery products. For its part, the Canadian government has declared the Chinese tariffs "unjustified," although it has not announced any measures in response. These actions indicate that the Chinese government could soon approve measures on European agricultural products in response to the tariffs imposed by the EU last October on Chinese electric cars, something that could particularly affect pork products, which Chinese authorities then investigated.
