So far in 2003, a total of five new business projects have been launched under the preferential customs and tax scheme offered by the Gran Canaria Free Trade Zone, joining the companies already established since last year.
The new business ventures encompass sectors as diverse as logistics and warehousing services, optical goods sales, manufacturing of products derived from treated native plants, prefabricated construction materials, and industrial refrigeration supplies. Existing companies operate in the areas of ship supplies and online sales.
Before the end of the year, a tobacco storage warehouse and an IT supply and services company are also expected to be operational, while a final project dedicated to the installation and repair of ship hydraulic systems has already begun construction of its new facilities. These are in addition to 22 other approved projects, still awaiting the definition of the investment model and the facilities where they will be located. At the same time, work continues on receiving and authorizing new projects, thus achieving the proposed objective of diversifying and revitalizing the business sector in Gran Canaria by leveraging the tax and location advantages offered by the creation of a free trade zone associated with the Port of Las Palmas.
