Collaboration in Defense and cooperation in third markets: Spain and Japan strengthen their relations

The Foundation holds the first Board of Trustees Meeting of 2023

At the first Board of Trustees Meeting of the Foundation of 2023, held on Wednesday, June 28 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid, various topics were addressed that seek to strengthen relations between Spain and Japan.

Spanish and Japanese companies, universities, public institutions and representatives of the ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries gathered at this important meeting.

The Japanese ambassador in Madrid, Takahiro Nakamae, and the deputy director general of South Asia of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Carmen Cano, together with the Spanish ambassador in Tokyo, Fidel Sendagorta, were present at the Meeting. In addition, tribute was paid to Josep Piqué, president of the Foundation between 2007 and 2022, who died last April.

 

The representatives of both countries agreed that relations between Spain and Japan are experiencing a revitalization after a period of relative inactivity during the pandemic.

 

The Embassador Sendagorta highlighted the importance of advancing defense cooperation, taking advantage of the strategic convergence between Europe and Japan to increase cooperation at a time when democratic countries face common threats.

For her part, Deputy Director General Cano highlighted that relations between Spain and Japan have experienced a significant boost in recent years, both due to the end of the restrictions derived from the pandemic and due to the Russian aggression against Ukraine. This has highlighted the need for both countries, which share similar values ​​and worldview, to continue working together.

Ambassador Nakamae emphasized lThe importance of engaging with emerging countries, especially those located in the Global South. Furthermore, he highlighted the progress in political, scientific and cultural exchanges, and expressed hope that tourist flows will recover to pre-pandemic levels.

The activities carried out by the Foundation in 2023 were also evaluated at the Meeting, such as the XXIII Spain Japan Forum, which will take place in Salamanca from November 28 to 30, and the first edition of the program Japanese LeadersTo be held in Madrid and Barcelona from July 3 to 7. Likewise, the interactive infographic was presented "Spain and Japan in figures", which compiles the main economic metrics of bilateral relations.
