En Athens, Greece, the ambitious project has been launched COP-Pilot (Collaborative Open Platform for Piloting services across emerging smart IoT and Edge computing environments), an initiative that promises to revolutionize the management of maritime and land traffic through a Smart IoT platform. With a budget close to 28 million euros, co-financed by the programme Horizon Europe from the European UnionThis project aims to integrate advanced technologies to drive digital transformation in various industrial sectors.
The project is led by Netcompany-Intrasoft, S.A., in collaboration with entities such as the Valenciaport FoundationThe open collaborative platform to be developed aims to manage end-to-end services in various industrial areas, ensuring security, automation and intelligence. Its design allows for seamless integration with underlying technologies.
The project will be implemented in four large pilot clusters: energy, smart cities, agriculture and industrial manufacturing. The pilot dedicated to smart cities, led by the Polytechnic University of Valencia and with active participation of the Valenciaport Foundation, will focus on Valencia and its surroundings. This pilot will evaluate smarter and more sustainable solutions for mobility and data through large-scale testing in scenarios such as the Port of Valencia or the industrial estate of Almussafes.
In particular, the Port of Valencia will be a focal point where relevant use cases for any entity in the port cluster will be studied. A smart IoT platform will be used to significantly improve the safety and efficiency of maritime and land traffic through precise maritime monitoring and real-time risk assessment technologies.
The Valenciaport Foundation will play a crucial role in developing the necessary requirements for end users and drafting specific use cases for the port. In addition, they will work with their recently inaugurated advanced 5G laboratory. This laboratory will make it possible to address cases that demand large volumes of data and to interconnect millions of IoT devices simultaneously.
According to Paul Palomo, responsible for the COP-Pilot project at the Valenciaport Foundation: “The relevance of this initiative lies in the fact that it seeks to develop and promote a overall platform that makes real use of advanced types of collaboration services across all segments, inspiring new growth capabilities for the entire value chain.” Palomo stresses that the aim is to provide real added value in both technological and operational terms: “The goal is to fully leverage the current capabilities of decentralized processing along with improved services thanks to low latency.”
This joint effort between leading technology companies and academic institutions promises not only to optimize existing processes but also to pave the way for future innovations within the field. European industrial-logistics thanks to the efficient use of both technology and operations provided by cutting-edge digital tools such as those offered under the conceptual framework proposed by COP-Pilot.
