Sake consumption is decreasing while wine consumption is increasing; however, wine's market share in Japan is only 8% of the total alcoholic beverage sector, representing a niche opportunity, as noted by Pedro Gallego, representative of the Spanish-Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Japan, during the event "The Wine Market in Japan".
During the event they announced the parameters and trends of wine consumption in the Japanese country, a trend that is increasing and which shows that wine consumption has already moved to homes, 58% of consumers prefer to buy wine in supermarkets to drink it in bars, as was traditional.
Almost half of the Japanese adult population consumes wine at least once a week; 7% do it daily and the female gender is the engine of growth; women who form the largest percentage of wine consumers and buyers: 55%.
The origin of the wine is also a decisive factor for the Japanese and this becomes a positive factor for Spanish wine. Spain is the fourth largest wine exporter to Japan and the work that is intended to be carried out is aimed at increasing its presence in a market. where red wine is the most popular and where sparkling wine is gaining more and more space.
The event also promoted the “Sakura, Japan Women's Wine Awards 2017”, which will be held in its fourth edition next year and whose prestige makes it an important endorsement for wineries that wish to position themselves in this market.
