Deutsche Telekom and real estate association to promote internet television use

German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom and the German real estate association GDW have signed a cooperation agreement to promote the use of Internet Protocol television.

According to Deutsche Telekom, the partners will cooperate in marketing broadband, telephone and television services via the internet in the rental homes of the companies associated with GDW.

Deutsche Telekom and GDW intend for these features to become standard equipment in homes and present an alternative to cable and satellite television programs, the German company said.

Thanks to the agreement, some 17 million households in Germany, almost half of all households in the country, will be able to access Deutsche Telekom's high-speed internet lines until the end of 2007.

At the same time, the company and the association plan to collaborate on other projects based on these telecommunications infrastructures to offer additional services in health, safety, entertainment and energy saving, said GDW President Lutz Freitag.

Deutsche Telekom's Philipp Humm considered broadband internet access to be "a quality feature" in homes and emphasized that, with the company's triple play service, users will receive a single bill for phone, internet and television.

On the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Deutsche Telekom shares were up 1,4 percent at 10:55 GMT, to 13,42 euros.
